Psalm 5

Read this passage!

God IS listening.
Verse 1 - Give ear to my words, O Lord, consider my sighing.
Verse 2 - Listen to my cry for help my King and my God for to you I pray.

Ever have one of those days? Ever thought that if you wake up negative – your day may follow suit? Do we begin our day with scripture or a prayer or something like this?

7:47AM: “Everything is going wrong –the car won’t start, the baby has a fever –I don’t have enough lunch money for the other two kids, Agnes just called and quit, I’m running late and I’ve got a run in my last pair of panty hose –this is gonna be one of those days! God, a little help here!”

10:21AM: “Dear God, So-and-So spread a vicious rumor about me and got MY promotion. I’m at my wit’s end. Handle it for me. Amen.” Two seconds later,” Hey Suzie, hold my calls, I’m going for a smoke.”

12:15PM: “Our Father, Thank you for this meal that I am about to receive…and while I have your attention, do you not care about what’s going on in MY life? Am I not one of Yours? Where ARE you?”

4:00PM: Deadline for the Upswing Case placed on your desk – due in one hour. “Help me, Jesus!”

6:30PM: Traffic snarled on the drive home, gonna be late picking up the baby, nothing in mind for dinner, the boys have ball practice in twenty minutes and I have to put on my Mommy’s Home Helmet! “Oh Jesus, Help me, oh please, oh please, oh please!”

“Help you with what, My Child? I AM LISTENING.”

Through all of the tears, rising blood pressure, hair pulling and frustration, God IS listening. But something is missing. We say good morning to the spouse, the kids, the dog, the school crossing guard, the lady at Starbucks, maybe to our immediate Boss. But the most important person of all, the one who gave us another day, we do not acknowledge. He is bombarded with “HELP ME!” without being specific in our outcries, without reverence or respect.

Have we thought about how God feels when we are in distress, become doubtful or talk to him like a second class citizen? Are we being deceitful claiming to be One of His inwardly but acting like The Devil’s Cousin outwardly?

Be specific in what you are asking God to do for you. Consider if you only call His name when you are in trouble. He is ALWAYS there LISTENING.

If we could rewind a bad day (and reflect how we could have done it differently), should we have God as the first thing on our minds in the morning, before that cup of coffee? Should we be dressed in heavenly amour before punching that time clock or listening to that juicy piece of gossip? God gives us instructions in this verse: “In the morning, O Lord you hear my voice, in the morning I lay my requests before you.” Do our requests become Me, Me, Me or God Is With Me?

When you wake tomorrow, before the shower and second cup of coffee, be still and say Good Morning to God, grasp the fact He is there to guide you through your day. Sing back to him this scripture “Give ear to my words, O Lord, consider my sighing.”

He would love to hear from you. He IS listening.

I am one of those that God speaks to me through others. Through a fellow member of Chase Oaks(S.F.), an invitation to visit was given to me in August 2009. My year of prayer to God of “send me to a church where I Can Be Fed the Word of God” was answered. His timing and placement are perfect.

I love the sound of steel guitars, three part harmony, photography and popcorn. And yes, it’s taken me three years to get my dreadlocks to my shoulders!

  1. That was beautiful……..what an awesome passage of scripture!!!! Thank you Cathey, for letting God speak through you to me. I’m on my way for my second cup of coffee but this time I will stop to praise our Amazing Creator for his words that just feed my soul and bring me closer to Him.

  2. Good word, Cathey. I guess I’m also a person that God speaks to through others b/c I heard from him today through you! Thanks for writing for Vertical.

  3. Cathey, what a wonderful description and interpretation of this passage! I appreciated the reminder to be specific in your prayer requests of God. It is so easy to just ask for help but that is not enough. Thanks for an uplifting and enjoyable message.

  4. Thank you Cathy for reiterating that we must be “specific” in our prayers. You have resounded what my accountability partner has been trying to get thru my thick skull…..so now in my prayers, instead of saying “HELPPPPPP me”, I praise HIM first, thank HIM second and think before I ask for anything.

  5. As I was reading the Psalm, verses 5 & 6 jumped out at me:

    5 The arrogant cannot stand in your presence;
you hate all who do wrong.

    6 You destroy those who tell lies;
    bloodthirsty and deceitful men
    the LORD abhors.

We’ve always learned that God hates the sin but not the sinner… yet these verses seem to be saying the oposite… I know God loves me and He’s shown His love to me very clearly and tangibly… but I also “do wrong” and “tell lies”…

How do we interpret these verses in light of that truth?

  6. Cathey, your words are so true. I know sometimes I don’t slow down enough to Thank God for another sunrise. The world doesn’t revolve around us, it just involves us. It’s how we live in it is what makes the difference. Thanks for sharing!

  7. Emi,

I think it is important to remember that yes, we are wrongdoers, but when we invite Christ into our lives, we recognize that he has paid all the punishment for our sins. There is no more punishment to be paid. So that when God looks upon us, we don’t have to reckon our wrongdoing again and again. It has been paid for.

  8. Dear Cathey, Thank you for the intensity, transparency, and passion of your devotion. It is the reality I live. Grateful for God using you in a wonderful way!

  9. This really spoke to me today! I posted it on my fb as well. Thank you!

  10. Thanks Kris. Humbling…

  11. Thank you for reminding me to say ‘Good Morning’ to our Lord! I did that just now and He said to tell you ‘Good Morning’ as well!
    Thank you and Good Morning!!

  12. Love it! God IS listening and it is a firm reminder that we are will have to “give an account of every idle word and thought”. If, rather, WHEN we start the day off with His guidance, there will be less “uh-oh” stuff on our repentance list. Thanks Cat for being available to be used.

  13. Thanks. I know God is listening, as I see my prayers answered.
