The Exodus was without a doubt the most significant single defining event for the nation of Israel—so much so that Jews still commemorate it to this day. This was where God declared His love and commitment to them, along with His intention to dwell amongst them as His people.

In some ways it can be seen in the same light as a baptism or a wedding—both are declarations of commitment. Throughout Scripture, we see the Exodus being remembered and God being honoured for His role in it. It is a good thing to look back and remember.

This year, my wife and I celebrate 20 years of marriage. We think this is definitely worth celebrating, because God has truly been good to us. Although at the time some of the difficulties seemed insurmountable, in hindsight we can clearly see His guidance and provision as we navigated through them.

Medieval Persian Sufi poets were believed to have coined the phrase, “This too shall pass.” This is a good phrase to remember in the face of trials, especially as we remember our own Exodus events when God “came through” for us and as we realise that, unlike the trials we face, the things that shall not pass are the love and faithfulness of God.
