Whenever we face difficult times, we have two choices for how we can react. The first choice is to panic and wonder, “Why did this happen?” and “What am I supposed to do next?” or “Where is God when I need Him the most?” Without a doubt, this is my most common reaction, even though it never accomplishes anything worthwhile.
The second choice is the one given to us by this psalm. We can remember what God has done for us in the past and we can thank Him for it. It’s not easy to thank God for the good things in our life when we are right in the middle of a struggle or a tragedy. But in reality, it is the best thing we can do. To call on God, to refocus ourselves on who He is and on what He’s done. In thinking of the good things He has done in the past, we can hopefully come to realize that God will bring good things out of our current bleak circumstances.
The beginning of this psalm tells us to “Glory in His name.” God’s name, or reputation, is one of faithfulness, love, and of lavishing us with good things that we do not deserve. As we go through hard times, let us focus on who He is, His reputation, and let’s put our faith in the God who never will leave us or forsake us.
One other thought about this psalm: As the psalmist recounted all the good things God had done for Israel, they were no doubt strengthened in their sense of being God’s community, chosen by Him to do His will. We, the church, enjoy a similar relationship to God. How awesome would it be to see our version of this psalm? A list recounting all the amazing things God has done for and through our faith community. I’d encourage you to leave a comment below and share something you recall that God has done for our church community. It might help encourage someone who is struggling to see God at work in their lives.
