Psalm 17

As David is praying to GOD to deliver him from his enemies, I’m fascinated by his use of words and his faith. When we pray for help sometimes we use words and phrases like, oh GOD I see no way out, I have no hope, It’s going to take a miracle, please help me I can’t do this; it’s too hard, and so many other weak, and defeated excuses. A couple of times when I was really down and out, I asked GOD to just make my problem go away – I just didn’t want to deal with it. David didn’t do this - he was obviously concerned over his situation, but he spoke with faith and authority. If we want to learn how to pray this is a perfect example. In verses 6 and 7, David praised and glorified GOD and showed faith all at the same time.

(NIV) 6 “I call on you, O God, for you will answer me; give ear to me and hear my prayer. 7 Show the wonder of your great love, you who save by your right hand those who take refuge in you from their foes.”

When I have faced difficult situations in the past, I prayed that GOD would remove my problems and make them go away. I never thought about the aspect of praise and worship while praying over my problems. I use praise and worship during my day, but not so much when I’m praying over a dire situation. Perhaps when we pray we should always include praise as part of the prayer, and let GOD know that we believe he will answer our prayers and that he is more powerful than our problems. He knows that He is bigger than our problems, and we know He is as well. But every now and then we should verbalize it and let him know that we know.

“Most gracious heavenly Father, we come to you in prayer, and we praise your Holy name. We know Father that you will meet our needs according to your riches in glory. We know that you are the one true GOD. We call on you, our GOD, because we know you will answer us; give us your ear to hear our prayer. Show us the wonder of your love; we know that you protect with your right hand those who take refuge in you from this world. We don’t ask that you remove our problems, we ask that you make us better equipped to face them. In Jesus name we pray, amen.”
